What the tags on your clothes mean. Tonight is laundry night.
Which may not sound like a big deal, but when you live in an apartment building it can turn into quite the production.
I was in the middle of sorting laundry / looking at tags when I thought, "How many people know what these symbols mean?"
There is no reason you would know unless someone told you. Some of them are intuitive while others seem completely random. I sometimes get tripped up or forget, so I decided to create a quick cheat sheet. Here is a list of symbols with what they mean:
An empty triangle means you can use any bleach.
A dark triangle with a "x" through the center means do not bleach.
The symbol that looks like a bucket of water with a "x" through it means do not wash.
A square with three vertical lines means drip dry the garment.
A square with one horizontal line means dry the item flat.
The symbol that looks like a bucket with one line underneath means use the gentle cycle.
A bucket with a hand reaching in means hand wash the item.
A circle with three dots in the center means dry the garment on high heat.
A circle with two dots in the center means dry the garment on medium heat.
A circle with one dot in the center means dry the garment on low heat.
An iron with three dots in the center means iron the item at a high temperature.
An iron with two dots in the center means iron the item at a medium temperature.
An iron with one dot in the center means iron the garment at a low temperature.
Finally, an iron with two lines under it with an "x" means do not steam the garment when ironing.
There are a number of other symbols, but those are some of the basics! Any symbols give you a hard time when you are sorting laundry?
