Nana Opens

Wherein a Girl Loves Cake and Fashion at Nana

The lovely Nana boutique had its grand opening this past Saturday. And what an opening!

Charm City Cakes created a dessert for the opening that captured the energy of Nana while depicting clothing found in the store.

I didn’t realize that it was a real cake at first! The detailing was extraordinary. See that belt that is 2nd from the left?

It’s based on a real belt that is in the store. (Third one from the right.)

More cake goodness:

Owner Jackie Flanagan & her staff were all looking fabulous (as usual!):

Nana carries a variety of women’s apparel, but I was most intrigued by the Preloved designs. Preloved creates new clothing out of reclaimed vintage fabrics.

A focus on utilizing reclaimed materials means each garment is one-of-a-kind.

Nana also carries vintage clothing

Vintage Slips

and items for kids.

Plush Toys

The thing I appreciated most was a sign hanging in the center of the store.

It says, “There is no doubt a new dress is a help under all circumstances.”

A help, indeed.

Check out Nana at 3068 Mount Pleasant Street, NW.

For the Love of Violet

New Violet Boutique Opens in NW DC

There are so many things to love about shopping at small, independent boutiques. The merchandise is unique and money spent supports local entrepreneurs instead of large chain stores. The down side of buying at boutiques is that prices tend to be higher.

Which is why I’m LOVING Violet Boutique in Adams Morgan.

Violet Boutique

Violet Boutique in Adams Morgan

The store exhibits all of the ups of a small boutique (fun merchandise, friendly / knowledgeable employees) AND has amazing price points. Think of it as the boutique equivelant of Forever 21 – the clothing is trendy and playful, while the prices are easy on the pocketbook.

What a breath of fresh air!

See those sunglasses in the picture above? They are $10.

This beautiful statement necklace? $24.00.

Cute sundress? $42.00.

It’s a fabulous place to pick up a new dress for a party or an accessory that will pull together an outfit.

I can picture myself popping in frequently to find something that is cute and affordable. Because it is all about stimulating the economy while supporting an independent business, right?

Seeing Green

Green with (Fashion) Envy

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and in honor of the holiday I went in search of amazing green apparel and accessories. Here are the top 7 (because what better way to celebrate than to utilize lucky number 7?):

Number 7

The first thing that came to mind when looking for green apparel was Diane von Furstenberg’s classic wrap dress. The New Julian Wrap Dress in Desert Leaf Large is part of DVF’s Vintage Collection. The cut looks wonderful on every body type and will never go out of style.

Number 6

The Marilyn Convertible Dress is reminiscent of Old Hollywood and can be worn in a variety of styles including as a halter dress, dress with sleeves, skirt, and a baby doll top. I love the idea of being able to create different looks out of the same item! This particular dress works for sizes 8 through 24.

Marilyn Short Convertible Dress in Kelly Green from Monif C ($195.00)

Number 5

Number five isn’t only about green, but the citrus-print canvas is so adorable I had to include it on the list. The Falabella Fruit-Print Small Tote is by Stella McCartney and can be found at Neiman Marcus.

Number 4

How amazing are these cat eye sunglasses? This vintage-inspired accessory can be found at Pixie Market for just $15.00.

Number 3

The Spring Arthur Pant from Alice + Olivia is a great way to celebrate the change in seasons. The bright green color just screams spring!

Number 2

Staying within the realm of beautiful bottom pieces, check out these Candy Shop Shorts in Green Apple from ModCloth. They are a take off of the classic sailor short, but in a bright hue. Love those big, beautiful buttons on the front!

Number 1

The number one item on our Green with (Fashion) Envy list comes from Lilly Pulitzer. Pulitzer’s clothes and accessories always feature such bright colors! The Espadrille Printed Wedge has a 4″ heel and a 1″ platform.

5 Fab Prom Dress

5 Amazing Prom Dresses

Prom season is upon us and this year I’m paying close attention to the dresses that are on the market. Call it the Hailee Steinfeld effect. Steinfeld, who is 14, showed up at the Oscars in an amazing gown. Although she didn’t come away with the Oscar that night, she did land on numerous Best Dressed lists. The phrase that was repeated over and over was, “age appropriate,” as in she looked beautiful, fresh, and age appropriate.

I’ve been thinking about age appropriate dresses as it relates to prom attire. Granted, the girls who will be attending prom this year are a bit older than Steinfeld, but finding a dress that is sexy (but not too sexy), beautiful, and confidence-boosting can be quite a tricky task. Many of the items placed under the category of “prom wear” look like they should be worn by someone who is 27 – not 17.

Case in point is this One Shoulder Prom Dress by Jasz from Prom Girl:

Wowzah.

My quest was to find 5 gowns that were pretty, dressy enough for the prom, and age appropriate without being stuffy. Here’s what I found:

Number 5

The Floral Fantasy Dress from Sydney’s Closet is such a breath of fresh air. The flowers look painted on (like it is a beautiful impressionist painting) while the cut is flattering. This dress comes in sizes 28, 30, and 32.

Number 4

I think cotton candy was the inspiration for the Evening Tallulah Strapless Dress by Betsey Johnson.

Evening Tallulah Strapless Dress from Betsey Johnson ($485.00)

Yes, it’s strapless. Yes, it’s short. But, it’s not too short. It looks like it is supposed to be worn by a 17-year-old who is going to a party!

Number 3

Don’t let the name of this store freak you out. The Sophia Dress by Pinup Girl Clothing is all about old Hollywood glamour. It’s meant for curves (and is available in sizes XS through 2X), and at $98 is the most reasonably priced dress on this list.

Sophia Dress from Pinup Girl Clothing ($98.00)

Number 2

The Strapless Print Prom Dress from Prom Girl is such a lovely and unique piece. The blue flowers tumble down the front and back to make it look like a painting. Small sparkles and a little train gives it an extra boost of glam.

Night Moves Dress from Prom Girl ($290)

Number 1

The Naughty Nights Dress from Sydney’s Closet has a name that could worry Mommas out there. Don’t let the name influence your love of this dress!

So, the neckline is plunging. But the thing I love about this dress is that it is made for curvy girls – and it is GORGEOUS and it WORKS. The empire waist gives definition, the cut is flattering, and the variance of green / black is well done. It also comes in blue, but I’m quite partial to the green. The Naughty Nights Dress is available in sizes 14W to 28W.

What do you think about these prom dresses? Are they age appropriate? Would you wear one of them (or would you approve of it if your daughter / niece wore one of them)? Do tell!

Louboutin Spring 2011

Christian Louboutin’s Spring Collection

Louboutin is one of the most exclusive names in footwear design. Those who love shoes swoon over his trademark red-lacquered soles. Last week I went to a Louboutin trunk show and was able to experience the Spring 2011 collection. Here are some pics of his latest:

This pair was my favorite -

Sooo interesting & adorable. Right now this heel is wait listed, but you can get more information by clicking here.

This pair was a close 2nd -

Simple but sexy. Amazing.

Tea with Karl Lagerfeld

Posted in Hilarious Fashion

Want a Little Lagerfeld in Your Tea Cup?

Have you ever wanted to have tea with Karl Lagerfeld? Well now you can! Pret-a-porTEA is a kitschy new product that pairs tea with some of the biggest names in fashion.

Karl Lagerfeld

Donatella Versace

I love how the design allows the fashion icon to just hang out in your tea cup. Those outstreached arms make them look like they are in a hot tub hanging out. Hilarious!

Naomi Campbell

This one has Naomi Campbell carrying a cell phone. Double hilarity!

Jean-Paul Gaultier

Pret-a-porTEA Set

Pret-a-porTEA can be found at Fred Flare for $16. Which seems a little high for 5 tea bags, but at least you can say you had tea time with these super stars. Also, a portion of the proceeds are donated to Bethanien-Kinderdoerfer, a German charity that provides assistance for disabled children.

Temporium Trunk Show

Beautiful Jewelry at the Temporium!

If you haven’t been to the Temporium, a pop up shop in Mt. Pleasant, I would urge you to go!

I attended a jewelry trunk show there yesterday and it was hopping! The Washington Post and the Pink Line Project were both there doing a story on the venue and designer / artist Daisy McClellan’s vintage-inspired necklaces, rings, and earrings.

Jewelry Designer Daisy McClellan

One of her pieces was this lovely locket:

Four pictures can be placed inside. Such a great way to keep those you love close to your heart.

Rings!

Although the trunk show was a one night only event, more of Daisy’s work can be found online at her Etsy shop, Lanyapi Designs. Her jewelry is also sold at Nana, which is opening later on this month. The Temporium is open through March 13th.

Street Style in Chinatown

I recently caught up with writer / producer Jen Barrie and she was so adorable I had to take her picture!

Apparently I wasn’t the only one who thought so. Right before I snapped these pictures someone stopped her and asked her where she got her dress!

Dress & Necklaces – ModCloth

Jeans – Dollhouse

Boots – Bass

Leather Jacket – Wilson Leather

I love her look because it is layered with a vintage vibe.

Besides looking fantastic while walking around DC, Jen is a wonderful producer. She just started her own company and has worked with amazing corporations (Travel Channel, National Geographic, NBA) and people (Anthony Bourdain, Samantha Brown). Congrats on the new business, Jen!
