Top 5 Creative Shoes

Every season I’m interested in seeing the most creative, kooky, and curious footwear that’s out on the market. This spring there are a number of interesting creations out there, including various takes on the wedge. Love them or hate them these 5 shoes are certainly statement pieces!

Number 5

Nicholas Kirkwood Cutout Ankle Boot

I don’t understand what’s going on with this shoe, but I think it’s amazing. The Nicholas Kirkwood Cutout Ankle Boot can be pre-ordered through Nordstrom for $1,185.00. I can’t seem to wrap my mind around the wavy black and white lines, the top tie, white tassels, and the overall shape of the heel. What’s going on? It’s sort of a heel that kind of looks like a running shoe that is a boot. Oh, and the back has a zipper!

Number 4

Buckled High-Top Wedge by UES

The Buckle High-Top Wedge by UES is pepto-bismol pink and can be found at Cusp for $205.00. This one certainly looks like a suped-up sneaker with an open toe.

Number 3

Prada Lace-Up Cutout Wedge

It surprised me that this wedge is made by Prada! The Lace-Up Cutout Wedge can be found at Neiman Marcus for $695.00.

Number 2

Pegasus-Pleated Leather Boots

Ashes and Empires is a boutique out of San Francisco that can be found on the indie fashion website Smashing Darling. Aren’t these heels fab? They are Pegasus-Pleated Leather Spats with Button Detail and are $164.00.

Number 1

Spring in Your Step Heel

With this Spring in Your Step Heel from ModCloth ($153.99) you won’t need to wear any other accessories. All eyes will be on the huge flowers on your feet!

Amazing Swimsuit!

Today’s fashion crush is the Crete Convertible Strap Underwire 1 Piece Swimsuit.

Oh my goodness. Isn’t this the cutest bathing suit ever?

It is from a site called Always for Me that carries sizes 16W-26W. This particular suit is $132.00, comes in tropical blue or black, and has a convertible strap that can be worn 4 different ways (or without it at all as the below picture illustrates).

The cut and shape of this suit reminds me of all those great pinup illustrations from the 1950′s. The black one looks extra glam:

Isn’t it Marilyn Monroe-esq?

Love it. Who is ready for some sunshine?!

Urban Outfitters & Weddings

Urban Outfitters Walks Down the Aisle

It seems that a number of apparel companies have uncovered a new gem of revenue generation: weddings. As a consumer and a fashion consultant I’m all for it. It means more competition in the marketplace, which ultimately means various price points. Brides can shop a brand they already feel comfortable with as an alternative to visiting one of those awful wedding stores where the dresses are expensive and horribly made. (Any woman who has been a bridesmaid over the past 10 years can especially relate to that experience.)

Urban Outfitters, Inc., which is the parent company of Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie, has decided to get in on the wedding gown action. Its new online shop is cleverly called BHLDN (or, beholden). Its products are vintage inspired and range from the subtly sophisticated to costumey pieces. Overall, the brand seems to bring a new burst of creativity to bridal wear.

Here’s a look at some of what BHLDN offers:

Zinnia Gown ($1,800.00)

I’m not feeling the cut / shape of this gown, but do appreciate how it plays with color.

Tulle Era Dress ($2,600.00)

Such lovely material in a great antique color.

Tiered Tulip Gown ($2,400.00)

Greenbow Lace Gown ($600.00)

Very bohemian.

Fondant Tea Dress ($600.00)

This dress is perfectly named – the Fondant Tea Dress. It would be divine during a daytime wedding.

Valenciennes Dress ($350.00)

The great thing about the site is that they offer new takes on wedding party apparel and event wear. Which means bridesmaids may actually be able to wear the dress again for real.

Gin Fizz Shift ($450.00)

I’m sure there are a number of women out there who had a version of this dress in the 1960′s. This is what I mean about some of the dresses being a bit costumey.

Pastille Mini Dress ($260.00)

Indigo Mist Dress ($400.00)

Vapor Cardigan ($240.00)

There is also a section of the site dedicated to wraps. This Vapor Cardigan is so sweet I could imagine wearing it on many occasions.

Feather Bolero ($350.00)

Same goes for this Feather Bolero. Who needs a wedding when you have a great wrap?!

Etoile Birdcage Veil ($130.00)

There are also a number of creative veils and headpieces. Although, this one looks like the bride went to Red Lobster and got caught up in the decorations.

Voluminous Silk Headband ($130.00)

When I came across this picture all I could think was, “Excuse me? I ordered the LARGE bow!” This is a whimsical fashion statement, but I don’t think it would hold up over time. In my mind’s eye I see a bride looking back on her wedding day pictures and saying, “What did I have on my head?”

Dotted Voile Veil ($160.00)

This one is more like it. A 1950′s inspired veil that still looks timeless.

Magnolia Frame Headband ($80.00)

I can’t make up my mind about this headband. I do appreciate that it is very different from most of what is out there. It would be perfect for the bride who wants something ultra-creative or has eclectic taste.

Botanical Garland Headband ($460.00)

This Botanical Garland Headband is incredibly charming. It doesn’t need to be relegated to a wedding. It begs to be worn at a summertime party.

What do you think of Urban Outfitters new venture? Do you absolutely love any of these pieces? Hate any of them? Do tell!

Big Pink Polka Dots!

Today’s fashion crush is the Combo Jersey Minidress from Milly.

Combo Jersey Minidress from Milly

How adorable are those giant pink polka dots?

I really appreciate how this dress has long sleeves. I know I’ve said it many times (and will probably say it many more times in the future!), but finding dresses that provide warmth is too darn hard! The stylist for this photoshoot was quite clever – I love how he / she paired the dress with patterned tights to make it warmer. (Because when it comes down to it, if you are in a long sleeve dress but your legs are freezing it still doesn’t quite solve the problem.) Thus, I think this is a great transitional dress between seasons. You can wear it with or without tights on those odd spring days that start off freezing but end up nice and sunny.

This dress is on sale right now for $276.50, down from its original price of $395.00.

What do you think about the dress? About those big pink polka dots? Do tell!

Today’s Fashion Crush

I’ve been trying to keep a better eye on designer discount sites to find items that are an ideal combination of fab style at a great price. Today’s Fashion Crush definitely embodies that combo!

One Shoulder Color Block Dress

Jonathan Saunders from Outnet

This Bresie Block-Color One-Shouldered Dress is by Jonathan Saunders and can be found at The Outnet for $124.

I’m crushing on this dress because it is such a great exploration of minimal design while remaining on-trend with blocked color. The gray color variations are simple, yet the pop of blue keeps it interesting!

Mt. Pleasant Temporium Opens!

This past Friday was the opening of the Temporium in Mt. Pleasant. And what an opening! It started at 7:00PM and by 7:15PM the building was full of excited shoppers.

This pop-up shop features handmade goods from 30 independent artists. There is a great mix of fashion, items for the home, and kid friendly crafts. Here are some of my favorites:

Plush Owls

Owls!

Squirrels!

Fabulous $5.00 Earring Board

Close up of Earrings

I love the concept behind these literary wallets.

Wallets

One thing I appreciate about independent crafters / designers is that their products frequently have a sense of humor.  Take these fingerless “Hell Yeah” gloves. I got such a kick out of them!

Black Fingerless Gloves

Statement Gloves

It was also great to see men’s fashion represented. This “Rock Creek Park” tie would be perfect for the right guy.

There is also an evolving art project going on within the store. The front windows contain trees with clothespins on the branches. Shoppers are encouraged to fill out an index card regarding their hopes and dreams for DC / Mt Pleasant to hang on the clothespins. The Temporium grew out of partnerships between Mount Pleasant Main Street, SpeakeasyDC, Hello Craft, Radio CPR, Partners for Livable Communities, and the DC Office of Planning. The spirit of the store is about community, and the trees really represent the nature of the project as a whole.

The Temporium is open through March 13, 2011, and is located at 3068 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW. Hours are Monday – Friday 2:00-7:00PM and Saturday – Sunday 11:00-5:00PM.  A schedule of events (including trunk shows and educational sessions) can be viewed here.

Shopping Site Finds

There are a ton of great shopping sites out there now. The increased availability to designer clothing at discounted prices is amazing, but it can be a pain to filter through thousands of items on a dozen different websites. So, I did a roundup of some of the best items / deals out there this week!

Bluefly

Grey Sleeveless Sweater

Willow & Clay Sleeveless Draped Sweater from Bluefly

This sleeveless sweater by Willow & Clay contains some of my favorite clothing elements – it drapes beautifully, it’s a layer that adds warmth, and best of all – it has a hood! It’s such a great transitional piece between seasons. Right now Bluefly is running a Presidents’ Day Sale, so the final price is $64.79. (The retail value is $114.00, and the regular Bluefly price is $80.00. We LOVE sales on top of sales!)

Purple Jersey drop waist tunic dress

Alice & Olivia Purple Dress from Bluefly

I love the feel of jersey. Basically, I love any item of clothing that looks dressy but feels like I’m wearing comfy PJ’s! This purple jersey drop waist tunic dress from Alice & Olivia has a lined skirt and a deep scoop back. With the Presidents’ Day Discount the final price is $104.39.

The Outnet

Gold bracelet with a sun and moon

Lee Angel Gold-Plated Bangle from The Outnet

A dreamy gold-plated moon and star bangle by Lee Angel from The Outnet. It’s original price is $95, but is on sale for $47.50.

Another piece by Lee Angel. This gold-plated necklace can go with so many outfits! Its original price is $140, but is on sale for $70.

Gilt Groupe

Black Silk Skirt

Silk & Mesh Tiered Skirt by Vera Wang from the Gilt Groupe

My first impression of this skirt by Vera Wang is that it looks like something from Black Swan. I love the layers and panels throughout the piece. What surprised me is that it has an elasticized waist! Who knew? The skirt usually goes for $650.00, but is on sale at Gilt for $249.00.

White Purse

Swag Satchel by L.A.M.B. from Gilt Groupe

This L.A.M.B. bag is practical enough to use as an everyday purse while still remaining stylish. It is on sale at Gilt for $149.00 (original price $348.00) and comes in light gray, tan, or black.

Beyond the Rack

Black Dress

Lace Black Dress from Beyond the Rack

A simple black dress that has a lace back. It’s dressy but not over the top. It also has a fantastic price – $34.99.

Rue La La

Chair with a high back

Rose & Iris La Dome Chaisse from Rue La La

Obviously this isn’t a piece of clothing, but it was so adorable I couldn’t help but mention it. Doesn’t it look like one of the tea party chairs from Alice in Wonderland? It’s $1,099.90 from Rue La La. There is a limit of 10 per person, just in case you were thinking of dropping $10K+ on chairs in the next few days. (Ha!)

White ankle boot

Miss Sixty Jaiden 3 Peep-Toe Bootie from Rue La La

Even though I’m pretty much over booties, this one by Miss Sixty made me think twice about swearing them off. The ruching is beautiful! The price is $99.90, down from its original tag of $170.00.

Global Fashion Brands

Black long sleeve dress

Mia Dress from Global Fashion Brands

I’m always on the lookout for a great long sleeve dress. This is a mock turtle-neck Mia Dress by Avery Layne looks warm and stylish.

Black Dress with big pockets

Pocket Dress from Global Fashion Brands

Another little black dress from Global Fashion Brands. This one by Corey Payne is called the Pocket Dress ($260). Rightfully so, too! I love the exaggerated pockets and feminine neckline.

The Story of the Ring and My Valentine

Sometimes a ring is not just a ring. After being in so many closets I realize the deep connection between memory and fashion. There are certain items that may not seem significant at first, but to the owner they represent a pivotal life moment, a relationship, or just a memory that fills them with joy.

The below story is about an object – a ring – but, it is really about a strong memory of love that was expressed by my father. The older I get the more I understand how blessed I was to grow up in a household that communicated love frequently through words and through actions. I know that’s not everyone’s story.

Sometimes it takes courage to express love in different types of relationships – with family, friends, coworkers, partners. Valentine’s Day is becoming more of a day of accountability – do the people in my life know that I love them? How can I make that known throughout the year? Do I express it clearly? Do I express it even when it’s difficult? I’m working on having the courage to love people with abandon, with an openness of heart, and to love individuals when they are prickly and it isn’t easy. It’s a continuous life lesson.

So, here is a story about love on Valentine’s Day. Many blessings and love to you this day. xoxo

Think Pink!

Pink Fashion

To Valentines or not to Valentines: that is the question! Do you struggle with how you feel about Valentine’s Day? I have a love / hate relationship with it myself. Sometimes it’s wonderful to have the opportunity to say,”I love you.” Sometimes I’m a big ball of stress about it.

All of that all being said, I do adore the color pink. Pantone named Honeysuckle the color of 2011, which may explain the influx of lovely pink accessories and wardrobe staples. Here are a few items to make sure that you look pretty in pink this Valentine’s Day:

Warm(er) Dress Options

5 Warm Dress Options

Basic black pants can provide an answer to many cold weather wardrobe conundrums, but there are still occasions during the winter months where a dress is required. Yet, trying to find a warm dress these days is like trying to find a needle in a haystack! Dresses by definition show more skin, but are there a few options out there that will provide warmth? I’ve been on a mission to find dresses that require minimum layering while still remaining dressy enough for a special event, work meeting, or social engagement. Here are five:

Black Long Knit Dress from Pixie Market ($126)

This dress from Pixie Market has long sleeves and is made of a wool acrylic blend.

Stretch Cotton Rib Tank Sweaterdress from Victoria's Secret ($25 dress, $39 rib cardigan sweater)

This sweater dress from Victoria’s Secret is actually two different pieces (which of course you have to purchase separately). But, I like that the outfit can be broken apart and work with other items in a wardrobe.

Sculpture Dress by Redoute Creation from Avenue ($34.99-$37.49)

I just love how this dress from Avenue is draped! The arms add an interesting detail without being too outrageous.

BCBGeneration Dress with Attached Scarf from Macy's ($74.99)

This dress has drama! The BCBGeneration Dress from Macy’s has an attached scarf and front pockets. (I love dresses with pockets!) Even better? It’s on sale for $74.99, down from the original price of $98.00.

Fever Dress from Macy's ($44.99)

The Fever Dress in Imperial Jade from Macy’s provides an amazing pop of color in a sea of wintertime black and grey.

What about you? Have you been able to find a warm dress? Do you tend to stay away from dresses completely during the winter?
