Bring in 2011 with Glitz & Glam

New Year’s Eve is a time to party, but it can also be a time of fashion frustration. If you are already stressing about what to wear on the last night of 2010, here are a few suggestions so you can ring in 2011 in style.

Betsey Johnson White Strapless Dress

Evening Organza with Flowers Strapless Dress by Betsey Johnson

Oh, Betsey Johnson, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. This Evening Organza with Flowers Strapless Dress reminds me of a shorter version of Audrey Hepburn’s black and white dress in Roman Holiday. A modern, flirty update on a classic dress.

Store: Betsey Johnson

Multiple Locations: 3029 M Street, NW (Georgetown, Washington, DC); 1809 G International Drive (Tyson’s, McLean, Virginia); online

Price: $388.00 – get 40% off on the Betsey Johnson website for a limited time.

Red Dress from Shabby Apple

Ski Bop Dress from Shabby Apple

Shabby Apple is quickly becoming one of my favorite online shops. The company’s philosophy is to provide dresses that are complete one-piece outfits so their clients do not have to wear, “a tank top, cardigan or long slip,” with the ensembles. The items are also conservative in cut and show only a little bit of skin. But, that does not mean the clothes are stuffy! Instead, they tend to be vintage-inspired, shapely, and sexy. The Ski Bop Dress is a nod to old Hollywood glamour.

Store: Shabby Apple

Location: Online

Price: $92.00

Black Flower Ring from Forever21

Bold Faceted Beaded Ring from Forever21

Attending a New Year’s Eve gathering does not necessitate dropping money on a dress. Instead, you can take something out of your closet and add accessories for a crisp, new look. The Bold Faceted Beaded Ring from Forever21 is a fun piece, and at $5.80 it’s an affordable way to add some glitz to your night out.

Store: Forever21

Multiple Locations: 1025 F Street, NW (Washington, DC); 1100 S. Hayes Street (Pentagon City, Arlington, Virginia); 7101 Democracy Blvd, Space 1252 (Montgomery Mall, Bethesda, Maryland); Online

Price: $5.80

Beaded Necklace from White House Black Market

Grey Ladder Necklace from White House Black Market

NYE is a great excuse to throw on flashy jewelry. But, what about investing in a small piece that you can wear throughout the year? The Grey Ladder Necklace from White House Black Market has enough sparkle to get you through the end of 2010. It can also make the transition from daytime to nighttime when you are wearing a black skirt or dress pants.

Store: White House Black Market

Multiple Locations: 2103 M Street, NW (Georgetown, Washington, DC); 5330 Western Avenue (Friendship Heights / Wisconsin Place, Chevy Chase, Maryland); 50 Massachusetts Avenue, NE (Union Station, Washington, DC); 8023L Tysons Corner Center, Suite A (Tyson’s, McLean, Virginia); online

Price: On sale for $34.99

Resort Wear 2011

2011 Resort Wear

It’s hard to think about short sleeves, blouses, and sundresses while there is still snow on the ground, but the latest designer Resort Wear lines are now available.

Resort Wear was originally marketed to people who were going to spend December and January traveling to warm, tropical climates. Now it is seen as a year-round look that is especially useful to those who live in sunny parts of the United States and abroad.

As we sit in DC wrapped in layers of clothes and wearing accessories like mittens and faux fur hats, it’s nice to take a break and imagine sunshine and mild breezes. So, here’s a peek at Resort Wear pieces that are in stores right now:

Black and White Diane von Furstenberg Dress

Brisa Wrap Dress in Black & Ivory by Diane von Furstenberg ($325)

Dian von Furstenberg doing what she does best – the wrap. It’s an easy, breezy garment that will still look fresh seasons from now.

Green and gray dress from Alice + Olivia

Denim Roxanna Bustier Dress by alice + olivia ($297)

I love the bright green color on such a classic shape. It just says sunshine!

Black and orange Tory Burch Top

Liseth Tunic by Tory Burch ($350)

The simple cut of this top allows for the bold, layered pattern.

Black Michael Kors Dress

Belted Drape Dress in Black by Michael Kors ($1,595.00)

This sophisticated Little Black Dress can easily transition from day to night.

What do you think of this year’s Resort Wear? What do you think of the concept of Resort Wear in general? Is it completely impractical, or something that is welcome after all that cold weather?

Candy Coffee

Candy Coffee & Small Pleasures

In Fayetteville, North Carolina, there is a small hair salon that is an absolute gem. My family lived in Fayetteville for a number of years, and when the holidays rolled around I would book my flight down south and then immediately call the Clip Joint and set up an appointment.

Going to the Clip Joint always guaranteed coming home with two things: a fabulous haircut and a buzz from the Candy Coffee.

Candy Coffee is one of the many drinks offered to Clip Joint’s patrons. It’s a super-sugary caffeinated treat that is similar to drinks served at Starbucks. But, having a cup while reading a celeb-filled magazine and watching a stylist (who was more of an artist) work wonders with hair color was such a decadent escape.

I was thinking about that experience today while rushing around completing last minute minute errands. My to-do list kept getting longer and my stress level continued to rise. Then, when the memory of Candy Coffee came to mind, I decided to stop and make myself a cup. All of those fun memories of getting my hair done and talking to my uber-talented stylist, Christy, came flooding back. It made for a lovely moment.

Cup of Coffee

Mmmm....candy coffee.

My guess is your to-do list is quite long as well. The holiday season can be filled with such joy, but there are also 100 errands to run, things to do, logistics to work out, etc. The challenge is to find small pleasures as we go through these last few weeks of 2010. Mine today was sugar coated, but that’s just one example. Take a bath, read a magazine for 10 minutes, do a yoga pose, take a break to call a friend…Think of something small that gives you a moment to just breathe and be present.

Candy Coffee Recipe

Make a cup of coffee and add creamer. (There are lots of great holiday flavors on the market right now like gingerbread, eggnog, and peppermint mocha.) Add a teaspoon of sugar and stir. Add whipped cream. Place chopped pieces of chocolate or candy cane on top.

Awesomely Bad Sweaters

5 Awesomely Bad Holiday Sweaters

The golden years of horrible holiday sweaters may be behind us. The 1980′s were an excellent decade for tacky Christmas wear. Even in the 90′s everyone and their mother (and grandmother) started sporting a holiday sweater the day after Thanksgiving – and it was considered cool. Alas, the holiday sweater has been relegated to hipsters and / or the ironic Holiday Sweater Party.

As a fashion consultant I’m very thankful that stores are carrying fewer Christmas cardigans each year. But, there is a part of me that is quite nostalgic for the joy a really bad sweater can bring. Thus, here’s a look at some awesomely bad sweaters out on the market right now:

#5

Home for the Holidays Sweater form The Tog Shop

(on sale $58.99 – $69.99)

One reason I just LOVE this sweater is that it looks like it came straight out of 1987. My guess is that a few people out there have this exact sweater still in their closets. It includes hand embroidery and gold thread accents – two essential elements of an awesomely awful holiday ensemble.

#4

Quacker Factory Fiber Optic Lighted Holiday Sweater from QVC

(on sale: $32.96)

This holiday sweater bypasses the passe colors of red and green and goes to a dramatic ice blue. It also includes one of the best sweater enhancements ever: fiber optic lights. Amazing. If you are going to go all crazy-holiday-apparel I say go all out. Get the one with the lights.

#3

Sledding Scene Pullover Sweater from CJ Banks

$79.50

The number 3 sweater on our list includes a little bit of everything. Reindeer, snow, a kid sledding down the wearer’s torso, trees, and red doves. The kid riding the sled is wearing a green snow sweater too! A sweater on a sweater = total bonus points.

#2

Christmas Morning Cardigan Sweater from CJ Banks

$89.50

I love this sweater because it tells a story. It’s snowing outside, it’s dark in the house, and presents are waiting by the tree. Santa is even carrying a mesh bag, and there is a cat (?) sitting in the window. Speaking of cats….

#1

Holiday Kitties Novelty Cardigan Sweater by The Country Ewe

$149.99

Kittens love Christmas too! Cats wearing scarves and holiday bows are featured on the front, back, and arms of this sweater. Awesomely bad at its finest!

Do you have a horrible / wonderful holiday sweater in your closet? Any great Christmas sweater stories from the past? Do tell!

Anthropologie Accessories

Store in Chevy Chase is Accessories Only

I’m a self-proclaimed Anthropologie addict, so I was completely delighted to hear about the new Anthropologie Accessories store in Friendship Heights (i.e. Chevy Chase, Maryland). It’s the first Anthropologie store of its kind and carries shoes, jewelry, scarves, and other beautiful baubles. Here are some pics!

Wall of necklaces from Anthropologie Accessories

Wall-O-Necklaces

Necklace of large faux pearls from Anthropologie

Necklace made of large clear beads and blue ribbon from Anthropologie

The boutique is similar thematically with the main Anthropologie store and includes whimsical means of decorating with merchandise.

Small Circle Mirrors and Necklaces

Functional art - a display of mirrors and necklaces.

I like it that Anthro also incorporates couches and chairs into the design of the store. I call the below furniture “boyfriend chairs,” since significant others tend to sit in them looking bored out of their minds while trying to distract themselves with iPhone apps.

The Boyfriend Chair

The back section of the store has a display of hats, hairpieces, and more jewelry. The sign above a section of purses reads, “Use it up wear it out make do or do without.”

Sign that says Make Do or Do Without

Hats and Hairpieces

Hats and Feathery Headbands

I especially loved this selection of eyeglass cases.

Finally, let’s not forget the shoes!

The Anthropologie store is located within The Shops at Wisconsin Place. Metro: Red Line to Friendship Heights. Hours are Monday – Saturday 10:00AM-8:00PM, Sunday 12:00PM-7:00PM.

5 Crazy Shoes

Posted in Hilarious Fashion

These Shoes are Crazycakes

This week I have been doing some research for an upcoming column for the website Sex Really. My fashion investigation led to an interesting discovery – there are lots of crazy shoes out on the market right now! They range from fun to hideous. Here are my top 5:

Crazy Shoes #5

Iron Fist Turquoise Frankenstein Platform Heel from Hot Topic

Price: $24.74

A closed monster mouth above an open toe. Love it.

Crazy Shoes #4

Purple Corset Style Lace Up Platform from Electrique Boutique

$61.99

This heel has an 8 inch heel and 4 inch upper platform. And a corset.

Crazy Shoes #3

Make Way Heel from ModCloth

$239.99

I actually think the right type of fun personality could totally pull off this heel. But, I would like to rename it the, “Girl, Did You Just Walk Through Skittles?” Pump.

Crazy Shoes #2

UGG Australia Bailey Button Krinkle Boot from Nordstrom

$159.95

There is so much going on with this boot I’m not exactly sure what to say. The bottom part of it looks like a clown shoe. The top of it does look warm, but, then there is a crinkle finish. If you need one other thing to throw into the mix you can order it in purple.

Crazy Shoes #1

Jeffrey Campbell Mucho Brown Sandal Boot Heel from LuLu’s

$169.00

For the woman who has very cold ankles but very hot toes.

What do you think? Do you like some of these selections? Hate them?

Hilarious Fashion – Urban Outfitters Edition (Bonus! Models Eating!)

I’ve been receiving Urban Outfitters catalogues only for a few months, but I always get such a big kick out of them. I expected hipster clothing, ironic t-shirts, and cute housewares, but what I did not expect was to get a giggle while flipping through the mag.

Case in point – this picture of my Uncle Eddie:

All Images Urban Outfitter's November / December Catalogues.

Okay, it isn’t my Uncle Eddie. But, if this guy was 60 years older he would be the spitting image of Eddie. Crazy hair, disheveled clothes, coming through the door in a confused state where you KNOW some kind of bizarre life situation has contributed to his haphazard appearance.

Then there are these guys, who look like they are acting out a scene from Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby:

Guy 1: I give you one option. As a sign of humility, if you kiss me on the lips now I will return to Paris and you will never see me again in NASCAR.

Guy 2: The answer is never. Do you hear me? Never EVER.

Finally, what is going on with this girl on the far right? Her expression is ha-larious:

"This vest is what?! Faux squirrel fur?"

But, I must give credit to Urban Outfitters for showing something rare – pictures of models eating. When was the last time you opened up a fashion mag or catalogue and saw a woman eating something? It was quite the welcome surprise.

Have you ever thought a company had entertaining catalogues? Do tell!
