Peacock Blue

Posted in Fashion Collage

Ahh…THAT’S Why It is Called Peacock Blue!

A peacock isn’t exactly the bird that comes to mind over Thanksgiving, but this past holiday I had a chance to visit a few friendly peacocks that live only a few blocks away from my family.

I have a faint memory of seeing peacocks before, but this time around I really understood why that vibrant blue is utilized in fabric so often.

They are such stunning creatures! Here is a quick look at some fashionable items that are inspired by the colors and plumage of the peacock:

Do you like wearing peacock blue? After seeing the birds up close I want more of that color in my wardrobe!

Stunning Donna Karan New York Style

Many of you might be getting ready for the holiday party season. As you reach in the depths of your closet and bring out your LBD, check out Donna Karan’s interpretation of the old standby:

I call this the “Business in Front, Party In the Back” Dress. It’s actually 2 pieces – a top and a skirt. It has a simplicity of line but is incredibly dramatic. This is not wallflower evening wear! Can you imagine the type of exit you could pull off? It reminds me of the clever line from the movie Face Off, “I hate to see you go, but I love to watch you leave.”

(Things I never thought would happen – quoting Face Off in a fashion blog.)

DKNY is giving an extra 30% off sale items online now through Sunday, November 28th. Both the top and bottom are on sale.

Sculpted Felt Ruffle Gilet Top $710.49

Slim Evening Skirt $668.49

Have you ever pulled off a dramatic exit wearing just the right outfit?

Brightest Young Things Style at Red Palace

The Brightest Young Things 1st All City Happy Hour event was last night at the newly renovated Red Palace. (The Red & Black and Palace of Wonders recently joined forces to become the Red Palace located at 1212 H Street, NE.) There I met photographer Shauna Alexander.

Headshot of Shauna Alexander

I loved her outfit because it was such a fun use of color and accessories.

Isn’t that an amazing pop of yellow? I asked if she purposefully bought both the shoes and the cardigan at the same time so that they would match. As it turns out it is Shauna’s favorite color, she buys it as often as she can.

Sophisticated Style & Holiday Trunk Show at M29 in Georgetown

M29 held a holiday trunk show last night featuring Moyna handbags. I went to check it out and was greeted at the door by Ronald. He barely welcomed me to the store and asked if I needed any help before I said, “Ah! I have to take your picture!”

Picture of Ronald at M29

I was just smitten with his clothing and style.

He is able to pull off a look that is both sophisticated and approachable.

The cardigan and corduroy pants are from Zara. He is wearing frames from LA-based Giant Vintage. The watch is from Nordstrom, and both the shirt and tie are vintage. I love how he combines vintage and modern elements to create a polished look. How fabulous is Ronald?

So, back to the Moyna trunk show. Each bag is hand beaded and embroidered. I especially enjoyed this pink handbag because it looks like layers of flower petals:

Here are a few more examples of the purses:

Neiman Marcus Christmas Book Cover by Hilary Knight

Oooh, I was just thrilled to get the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book this year. Not only do they present delicious (and sometimes outrageous) gift options, this year I was especially thrilled to see the cover. At first glance I noticed that the artwork looked familiar…..and with further inspection found that it was done by Hilary Knight!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Knight, he is the fabulous artist behind the Eloise books. And, if you don’t know Eloise you must drop everything this instant and go to your nearest bookstore!

Eloise is a precocious six year old who lives at the Plaza. I think of her as my mischievous inner child.

I once had a chance to meet Hilary Knight and the word that best describes him is “dapper.” I only spent a few minutes with him, but he was very kind and gracious.

When I opened my mailbox and saw his holiday drawing it was such a lovely surprise!

What a great way to be reminded of the kid inside this holiday season!

In somewhat related fashion / Eloise news, Betsey Johnson recently designed the interior of the Eloise Suite at the Plaza.

Crochet, Math, & The Ocean

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum

An exhibit at the Natural History Museum combines seemingly disassociated elements – crochet, math, and the ocean. So, what do these things have in common? A fabulous new exhibit entitled, “The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef,” tells the story.

In the late 1990′s mathematician Dr. Daina Taimina made an amazing discovery. She created a model of hyperbolic space using the unlikely medium of crochet. Up until that time mathematicians thought it was impossible to create such a model. This discovery was important because crochet can mimic forms that are found in nature, including coral.

Enter in Margaret and Christine Wertheim, co-founders of The Institute for Figuring. They created the traveling coral exhibit to showcase environmentalism, the mathematics of hyperbolic geometry, and the handcrafted art form of crochet.

The resulting project is currently at Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum.

Another element that makes this project so unique is that it is ever changing and expanding. Ocean Science Educator Catherine Suterac recently explained that crochet artists from the DC area contributed to the exhibit that is currently at the Museum. Over 800 contributors submitted more than 4,000 individual pieces.

The day I toured the exhibit I was lucky enough to run into one of the lovely artisans. Jamie Roberts was there visiting her 1st crochet piece that is now part of the exhibit.

Jamie explained that she found out about the project through a local knitting group. “It’s so exciting to contribute to a large community project like this,” she said.

The exhibit also tells an environmental story. In the ocean healthy coral reef has lots of color.

Climate change has bleached some of the reef turning it a white color.

Finally, pollution in the ocean has caused toxic reef. The exhibit has a section that is full of discarded elements including plastics and CD’s.

The exhibit is so powerful, beautiful, and dynamic I had trouble capturing it in just photos. Thus, here is a video just so you can get a sense of the size and overall feel of the artwork:

As a fashion blogger I was specifically interested in this project because crochet is such an old art form. I’ve been seeing many crochet accessories popping up on Etsy and at handmade craft fairs. If you are interested in learning more about crochet there are a number of books about it on Amazon including 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet: A Collection of Beautiful Blooms for Embellishing Garments, Accessories, and More by Lesley Stanfield.

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef is open through April 24, 2011. It is located in the Natural History Museum on the First Floor in the Sant Ocean Hall. The Museum is open every day except December 25th and hours are 10:00AM to 5:30PM.

Have you seen the exhibit? Do you crochet? What do you think of the project?

Musical Dress

Dress Made Out of Sheet Music Worn by Singer Julie Feeney

The amazing Julie Feeney performed at an intimate concert last night as part of The Pink Line Project’s Salon Contra. The Irish singer / composer came out in a stunning dress made out of the orchestral sheet music from her 2nd album, “pages.”

The dress was handstiched by artist Sharon Costello Desmond. 250 yards of gold thread were used to piece the dress together – seven inches of sewing took 2 1/2 hours to complete. (More on how the dress was designed can be found on Julie’s webpage.)

Her headpiece is a replica of a house that was created as artwork for the album “pages.” Both the dress and headpiece were amazing pieces of artwork, and such a joy to see in person.

One of my favorite moments from the evening was her performance of the lovely song Impossibly Beautiful.

The video showcases 18 different hats made by milliner Piers Atkinson.

Feeney usually incorporates 3 costume changes into her performances. When asked about how she merged fashion and music she said, “You have to be careful. Why are you doing it? Why are you wearing it? Is it coming from inside? It has to come from inside.”

Julie Feeney will be on tour in the United States in the spring of 2011.

Many thanks to Pink Line Project’s Philippa Hughes for such a great evening!

Fashion & Art at the Torpedo Factory

The Torpedo Factory just finished an exhibit in the Main Hall called, “Ofrenda: Art for the Dead,” which consisted of shrines, altars, paintings, and photography with the theme Dia De los Muertos (Day of the Dead). I stumbled upon it this past weekend and found the below piece quite fascinating:

Image of Artwork based on Day of the Dead

View of a Day of the Dead piece of artwork

I love observing how clothing is portrayed or created in artwork. The artist took pieces of newspaper and rolled them up to make the doll’s dress.

A cage with birds was bellow the dress. When someone would walk by the sculpture it triggered an audio component that twittered. It added such an interesting nuance to the piece.

I found the overall effect to be both frightening and beautiful.

P.S. If anyone knows the name of the artist or piece of work please let me know! The exhibit was from a variety of artists, but I couldn’t find a name next to this display.

Street Style in Georgetown

I ran into Lindsay at the Georgetown AMC and instantly loved her style! Such lovely fall colors on a chilly day. Many people were wearing combinations of black, brown, and grey, so Lindsey’s pop of mustard yellow and cranberry were such a treat!

She also had on such great details. A scarf with red polka dots, a white belt, and a brown bag. They worked together to give her a whimsical yet polished look.

She picked up her vintage skirt while traveling in London. The rest of the pieces are from Goodwill or borrowed from her mother’s closet.

Such great style! Love it!

Inspiration from Coco Chanel and Tim Gunn

Fashion is in the Air

CoCo Chanel once said, “Fashion is not simply a matter of clothes. Fashion is in the air, born upon the wind…It is in the sky and on the road.”

I was thinking about that the other day when I was taking a walk in NW DC.

Picture of Yellow Leaves on a Tree

Yellow Leaves on a Tree

There is a tree-lined path near my apartment where all the leaves have turned bright shades of yellow. A wind picked up and the leaves started to fall – they looked like big pieces of yellow confetti as they twirled through the air. It was an amazing sight to observe and filled me with such joy.

I think part of living a stylish life has to do with noticing the beauty that is all around us. We don’t have to create it, it already exists. And it will be there whether it is noticed or not.

In Tim Gunn’s book Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons for Making it Work chapter five is entitled, ”Get Inspired if it Kills You.”

Cover of the book "Gunn's Golden Rules"I was so appreciative that he included this subject matter in his book. Inspiration is such a huge part of living an artistic and engaged life, but sometimes it can be difficult to obtain. When Gunn’s students asked him how to get inspired he would say:

“Look around you! Look out the window. Go for a walk. Go to a movie. Go to a museum. Go see a show. Read a book. Go to the library. Take the Circle Line. Have a conversation.”

Each day on Twitter I issue a challenge. A few days ago my challenge was for people to think about inspiration and what lights that internal fire. It was (and still is) a challenge I issue to myself. I go through seasons where my well runs dry and the continuing need to produce, produce, produce, is exhausting. My guess is that others feel this way too.

I don’t think there is a single solution to obtaining inspiration. Lately my answer is simply to stop, breathe, and notice what is around. Sometimes life’s soft answer is to produce a fashion show of leaves falling to the ground. And sometimes that is just enough to fill me up and inspire me to keep going.
