Fashion for a Rainy Day

It’s always hard to know what to wear on a dreary day.

DC is in the middle of getting quite drenched by Tropical Storm Nicole, so I decided to look for some fun rainy day apparel.

Fashion for a Rainy Day

The Burberry trench would be perfect…if I had an extra $3K to burn.

But, don’t you just love that ModCloth necklace full of clouds and lightning bolts? It’s cheerful enough to get rid of the rainy-day blues.

What Old Library Books tell us about Beauty & Style

A friend sent me a link this morning to a fantastic site called Awful Library Books. The site highlights awesomely bad titles that are found in public libraries.

So, today when I was at the library doing a bit of research I couldn’t resist -I had to find out what my local branch had to offer in terms of style, beauty, and fashion books.

It was a-mazing.

Without further ado, here is the best of the worst:

Book Cover Color for Men

Color for Men by Carole Jackson, Published 1984

Pictures of 4 men in different outfits

Examples of “spring” men. The guy in the top left corner strikes me as especially hilarious. I think he is wearing a Members Only jacket.

Some more “spring” examples. For the top two guys….I just don’t quite know what to say…..

Guy wearing glasses

My favorite part of the book had to do with glasses suggestions based on the shape of a man’s face.

Under no circumstances should anyone ever wear these glasses. Unless you are a Hipster and are wearing them ironically. In that case, go forth.

Pictures of 2 men wearing glasses

More glasses pics. So 80′s!

Next, Hair Magic by Marion Mathews and Renske Mann, Published 1984.

You KNOW a book is going to be good when it shows a picture of a French Braid on the cover.

Woman with dramatic, curly hair

A section on the “Versatility of Hair.” You can wear yours down, or in a side ponytail with a headband!

2 pictures of the same woman, one with hair down, one in side ponytail

This is for special events. I can’t tell if they did a French Braid going up and then piled the rest of her hair on top – what do you think?

Woman with 80's hair

And, because I know everyone will love it, I’m including a bonus recipe found in the back of Hair Magic:

Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

2 egg yolks

12 fl oz warm water

2 tsp. vinegar

Beat the egg yolks into 4 fl oz warm water. Massage the mixture well into the scalp and then leave for about 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Add vinegar to 8 fl oz of cool water and use as a rinse. Rinse the hair 2 or 3 times.

Finally, we have a legendary book. The colors book.

Color Me Beautiful by Carole Jackson, Published 1980. (This is the same author as the first book above.)

Book cover for Color Me Beautiful

I didn’t learn about the importance of the Colors Book until I became a Wardrobe Consultant.

I started to work with clients who would tell me all about the colors they could and could not wear. I learned that they were talking about a fad in the 80′s where women would have someone tell them the colors that they looked best in and if they were a Winter, Summer, Autumn, or Spring.

There is truth in what was taught in those color sessions. Certain colors look best on certain skin types. But, what I found is that it also locked women into a particular look for decades.

Again, there are certain things in this book that still hold true. But, the looks are so 80′s! Love it.

The moral of the story here?

Support your local library. This can’t be what is on the shelves for our dear friends / neighbors who are studying about fashion and style!

Cleaning Clothes & Tags

What the tags on your clothes mean.

Tonight is laundry night.

Which may not sound like a big deal, but when you live in an apartment building it can turn into quite the production.

I was in the middle of sorting laundry / looking at tags when I thought, “How many people know what these symbols mean?”

There is no reason you would know unless someone told you. Some of them are intuitive while others seem completely random. I sometimes get tripped up or forget, so I decided to create a quick cheat sheet. Here is a list of symbols with what they mean:

An empty triangle means you can use any bleach.

Black triangle with an x through it

A dark triangle with a “x” through the center means do not bleach.

bucket of water with a x through it

The symbol that looks like a bucket of water with a “x” through it means do not wash.

Box with three vertical lines in it

A square with three vertical lines means drip dry the garment.

Square with one horizontal line in the middle

A square with one horizontal line means dry the item flat.

Bucket with one line under

The symbol that looks like a bucket with one line underneath means use the gentle cycle.

bucket with a hand reaching inside

A bucket with a hand reaching in means hand wash the item.

circle with three dots in the center

A circle with three dots in the center means dry the garment on high heat.

circle with two dots in the center

A circle with two dots in the center means dry the garment on medium heat.

circle with one dot in the center

A circle with one dot in the center means dry the garment on low heat.

iron with three dots in the center

An iron with three dots in the center means iron the item at a high temperature.

iron with two dots in the center

An iron with two dots in the center means iron the item at a medium temperature.

iron with one dot in the center

An iron with one dot in the center means iron the garment at a low temperature.

iron with a x under it

Finally, an iron with two lines under it with an “x” means do not steam the garment when ironing.

There are a number of other symbols, but those are some of the basics! Any symbols give you a hard time when you are sorting laundry?

Visual Merchandising

Anthropologie & Visual Merchandising

I have such a soft spot for the way Anthropologie approaches visual merchandising. It is always creative, surprising, feminine, and fun. Their concepts create an unique shopping experience.

Here are some pics of their Georgetown store:

Don’t you just want to curl up with a good book and take a nap in that chair?

Really, don’t you want to curl up while wearing one of those dresses?

In the words of Liz Lemon, “I want to go to there.”

Hilarious Clothing Advertising

An Open Letter to United Colors of Benetton

Dear UCOB,

I was taking a stroll in Dupont Circle the other day and came across this advertisement in your store window:

Advertisement of United Colors of Benetton

Hmmm...why does it feel drafty?

In case you can’t quite read your ad it states,”The Essentials of Life…Jeans.”

I’m thinking your stylist and or photographer and or marketing department forgot to include something in this picture. Mostly the jeans. Or any other clothing.

Granted, there are many companies that advertise clothing without showing the clothing at all. Or promote jeans with models who are actually wearing the product but nothing on top. These things are all expected after years of flipping through fashion magazines. But, this one made me laugh.

Mostly because that girl is nekkid.

She’s not even naked. I spent a lot of my childhood growing up in the South, and that is what we would call nekkid.

Please get that poor women some clothes. Preferably these elusive jeans you mention.

Thank you,

True to Style

H Street Festival Style

I met Kristie while attending the H Street Festival on Saturday and really loved her style. Such great basics put together for a wonderful end-of-the-summer look. White t-shirt, red skirt, blue scarf, and brown boots all come together in a way that is stylish and festive at the same time. And, aren’t those the perfect Aviators to go along with her outfit?

I also wanted to include a picture of my good friend, Carmel:

Carmel has such a well-curated wardrobe. She has basic pieces and fun accessories that are continually mixed-and-matched in creative and beautiful ways. Her long tank has silver studding at the bottom. Her purse is a vintage piece that she purchased at Eastern Market. That’s another reason I just love her wardrobe – so many items are bought locally! Just goes to show that you can put together amazing outfits utilizing local designers! Love it.

Modeling Casting Call

Behind the Scenes – Modeling Casting Call

Out of all my adventures in fashion, I’ve never worked on a runway show before. I’m so excited that is about to change with The Black Fashion Focus 2010 event this Friday, September 17th. I’m just getting started, so I will be working as a volunteer stylist and really as a runner / extra pair of hands to help out.

I was able to get a behind the scenes glimpse of their modeling casting call. It took place at Puro Cafe in Georgetown. Check out the back of the restaurant:

Backyard of Puro Cafe

Doesn’t that long aisle make the perfect practice catwalk?

Puro Cafe also has a lovely seating area. (Note to self: great place for a party.)

The models were checked in, their measurements were taken, and then they did 2 walks down the runway.

It was during this process I realized that even if I was 5’10″, a size 0, and gorgeous there is no way I could be a runway model. It takes such poise under pressure. It also takes grit – you are critiqued so quickly!

I also had a hilarious moment when I first walked into the casting call. I had been there all of 2 minutes when a girl walked up to me and said, “uhmmm….you are bleeding.” Apparently I scratched a bug bite or ran into something on my walk over to the cafe and a line of blood was trickling down my leg. Talk about a humbling situation! Here I was trying to act like, “oh yeah, I do this all the time!” and I was just a mess. :) Ha!

There are still tickets available for the event. You can purchase them here. All the proceeds go to Metro TeenAids, which is such an amazing organization. Many thanks to KUGo Productions who is making the event happen!

Hope to see you there on the 17th!

DC Fashion – Hemphill Gallery

I ran into Marcel at the opening of “The House of Chance and Mischief,” an art exhibit by Renee Stout at the Hemphill Fine Arts gallery.

I was instantly smitten with his sense of style – it was laid-back but perfect for the occasion. It communicated a sense of his personality and vibrancy through each selection. His multi-colored blazer is from JoS. A. Bank. The shoes are from Nordstrom. Very few people can pull off white loafers and Marcel does it beautifully.

If you get a chance I would highly recommend a trip to 14th Street to check out the exhibit. Renee Stout’s work has the ability to transport the viewer into another space that is real and dream-like at the same time. The pieces seem both familiar and a bit frightening.

Exhibit running through October 30, 2010.

Fashion’s Night Out – DC Style

New York City led the way, but DC got in on the action with Fashion’s Night Out this past Friday, September 10th. With so many businesses participating in the event it was hard to focus on just one part of the city! I ended up spending some time in Georgetown hopping from store to store. It was an amazing time! Here are some of my adventures.

Betsey Johnson

Models in front of Betsey Johnson

Betsey Johnson knows how to throw a party. Models in beautiful dresses greeted customers outside of the store. The inside of the store was a madhouse with wall-to-wall people oohing over Betsey’s flirty designs.

Crowd at Betsey Johnson, Georgetown

There was a lively party going on in the garden outside of the store. Any purchase made that evening granted shoppers access to the fun. I walked by Betsey Johnson about an hour after taking the above picture and there was a huge crowd outside of the store just waiting to get in. Betsey had the best club in town that night!

(Side note: Betsey Johnson will be airing her Spring 2011 show online at 6:00pm EST. Watch it live at www.betseyjohnson.com .)

My next stop was Juicy Couture where male models wearing top hats were serving pink cupcakes on silver platters. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I found a plum colored cardigan for an additional 40% off the redline price. Such a good deal. I also discovered that when I checked into the store using Foursquare it gave me access to a free sample of Juicy’s fragrance ‘Peace, Love & Juicy Couture.’ It was my first time coming across a deal utilizing the social networking site, so I was pumped. Except none of the sales associates knew what I was talking about. Three people and the manager later (and a few times of explaining Foursquare) everything worked out just fine.

Until there was an argument between the sales associates about exactly who helped me out with the sweater purchase. Ouch.

Next I went to Kate Spade.

Lovely Product Styling at Kate Spade, Georgetown

I always love shopping at Kate Spade because they do such an amazing job of embedding their brand essence into the smallest of experiences. For example, they handed out samples of their new fragrance Twirl. The perfume came with a bag of gold confetti that perfectly matched the gold flecks found on the design of the perfume bottle. Such elements of whimsy throughout their shopping experience!

I checked in at Kate Spade using Foursquare and received access to 15% off my entire purchase. I didn’t use the offer, but lesson learned. Businesses are using Foursquare as a means of promotion, which ultimately means more savings for shoppers. I’m going to check in more often.

So, the big question is will DC have Fashion’s Night Out again next year? Crossing fingers that it happens.
